We had above average winter and early spring rains, a cool summer and gentle ripening conditions throughout the 2022 season. This ripening period was also dry, and we didn’t experience any heat spikes at all. Veraison (the stage of grape development when the grapes change colour as they get nearer to harvest) was later than usual, and picking across all varieties was a little later than usual, too. Overall, a terrific vintage, with super quality whites and reds too.

You can go two ways when making a Pinot Grigio – you can take the path of making a lighter, fresher and leaner style, or you can go the road of a complex and textural Pinot Gris. Those who are familiar with Poppy know we took the first path. Our aim is to copy what the Italians do in the mountains of Friuli. We pick at night to protect the delicate flavours and then ferment the grapes in stainless steel tanks and don’t allow any time maturing in oak. We bottle the wine pretty much as soon as it was clean and bright.
